About The Apollo
For over 90 years, the Apollo has been far more than a stage. It has served as a global center of innovation and a creative catalyst for Harlem, New York City, and the world. As the "soul of American culture," we have done more than discover artists like Ella Fitzgerald and James Brown; we have launched the movements that define the American identity. Today we stand on the threshold of our most ambitious chapter yet. Now, we are currently in a historic moment of "Culture in Motion" as we scale the model for a 21st-century audience. In 2025, we broke ground on a transformational renovation of our Historic Theater, a project focused on the intersection of preservation and modernization. When we celebrate our grand reopening in Fall 2026, the Apollo will operate as a complete cultural campus for the first time in its history. This expansion—encompassing six distinct venues, immersive performance spaces, and a modernized public lobby—fundamentally redefines our scale and impact as we approach our centennial.

The Apollo is an American cultural treasure. It is a vibrant non-profit organization rooted in the Harlem community that engages people from around New York, the nation, and the world. Since 1934, The Apollo has celebrated, created, and presented work that centers Black artists and voices from across the African Diaspora. It has also been a catalyst for social and civic advocacy. Today, The Apollo is the largest performing arts institution committed to Black culture and creativity.

Job Description:

The Apollo Theater has always been more than a stage. It’s a living archive, a cultural engine, and a global symbol of Black artistic excellence. From the legends who made history under our lights to the artists shaping what comes next, The Apollo sits at the crossroads of past, present, and possibility.
We are looking for an in‑house Content Creator to help tell those stories—boldly, beautifully, and with intention.

Position Overview
The Content Creator is responsible for the strategy, creation, and stewardship of The Apollo Theater’s owned digital content ecosystem. This role blends creative execution with strategic thinking and archival storytelling, ensuring that The Apollo’s rich history and contemporary programming are translated into compelling content for modern audiences.
The role owns the creative use of archival assets, leads the development of original content, and partners across departments to bring The Apollo’s voice to life across digital platforms, campaigns, and cultural moments.

Key Responsibilities
Archival Content Ownership & Stewardship
  • Serve as the primary creative owner of The Apollo Theater’s archival content, including historic footage, photography, audio, and ephemera
  • Develop strategies to activate archival assets across digital platforms, campaigns, and storytelling initiatives
  • Partner with archives, programming, legal, and brand teams to ensure responsible, accurate, and brand-aligned use of historical materials
  • Translate legacy moments and artists into culturally resonant content for contemporary audiences
Original Content Strategy & Development
  • Lead the creative strategy and development of original content, including short‑form video, long‑form storytelling, editorial series, and social-first formats
  • Identify opportunities to create new narratives that reinforce The Apollo’s mission, cultural impact, and relevance
  • Develop content concepts that connect current programming, community initiatives, and artists with The Apollo’s broader legacy
  • Oversee content from ideation through execution, editing, and distribution
Creative Execution & Production
  • Create, edit, and produce high-quality content across platforms (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, website, email, and emerging channels)
  • Collaborate with photographers, videographers, designers, and external creators as needed
  • Maintain a consistent visual and editorial voice aligned with The Apollo’s brand identity
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Partner closely with Marketing, Programming, Development, Education, and Community Engagement teams
  • Support campaigns, launches, and live events with tailored content assets
  • Collaborate with external artists, creators, and cultural partners to develop authentic storytelling
Performance & Optimization
  • Track content performance and audience engagement across platforms
  • Use insights to refine creative direction, formats, and storytelling approaches
  • Stay current on cultural, social, and digital trends to keep The Apollo’s content relevant and forward‑thinking

Who You Are
  • A creative storyteller with 3+ years of experience in content creation, media, arts, or culture
  • Equally comfortable leading strategy and executing hands‑on creative work
  • Experienced working with legacy or archival material—or deeply curious and respectful of cultural history
  • Fluent in digital platforms and visual storytelling
  • Inspired by music, performance, Black culture, and creative innovation
  • Someone who understands that honoring history and pushing forward are not opposites—they’re partners
Core Competencies
  • Creative strategy & storytelling
  • Archival storytelling and cultural context
  • Video production & editing (proficient in editing tools such as CapCut Pro, Final Cut Pro, Sountrack Pro, or other video & audio editing software)
  • Digital and social media fluency
  • Cross‑functional collaboration (creating a content bank for social, editorial and marketing teams to strategize around)
  • Cultural sensitivity and historical awareness

Why This Role Matters
This is not just a content job. It’s an opportunity to help steward one of the most important cultural institutions in the world—preserving its legacy while shaping how The Apollo shows up for the next generation.
If you believe stories carry power, culture lives in the details, and history deserves to be experienced—not just remembered—we’d love to meet you.
